The Story

22nd January 2019

I’m very excited and pleased to announce that sheltaPod has a new owner.

In 2015, I gave birth to sheltaPod and raised it through those difficult ‘start up’ years. Every year sheltaPod has sold out, it’s popularity growing and now it’s ready to take that next big step into the worldwide camping market. But it’s not a journey I personally am able to make. I’ve taken sheltaPod as far as I can so I’m handing over the reins to a very successful tent manufacturer with global distribution and a great track record. In their hands, I’m confident that sheltaPod will go on to even bigger and better things. I retain an interest and will still be an adviser helping to maintain our excellent customer service record and the smooth fulfillment of customer preorders . I wish the new owner enormous success and can’t wait to see what the future holds for my ‘baby’!

Thank you so much to all our crowdfunding backers and past customers who helped make sheltaPod the success it is. Without you sheltaPod would not even exist. Julie

Hi, I'm Julie, creator of sheltaPod.

I've been a keen camper for many years, it's a great way to relax from the stresses and strains of life as a TV News camerawoman.

I bought my first campervan in 2012 but I couldn't find an awning that was quick and easy to put up singlehanded for one or two overnights. All I needed was a bit of outside shelter from the wind and rain when I was cooking and dining. I also needed extra space where family and friends could sleep.

The market is full of big, bulky awnings that block the light and views from inside the van. They claim to be 'quick erect', but in reality they take much longer. And they take up too much storage space when travelling in a small van
. I didn't want that so in 2015 I decided to get out my sewing machine and make my own. That early prototype gave birth to several factory prototypes.

A year later 'sheltapod' was born

In August 2016 we launched our first crowdfunding campaign with KICKSTARTER.  We managed to raise £44,197 which was fantastic. However we didn't quite reach our funding goal and so ultimately the campaign was unsuccessful. But we learnt from the experience and immediately started working towards our second attempt.

In October 2016 we launched another campaign with INDIEGOGO and on the 20th of November we finally reached our funding goal. sheltaPod then continued to gain even more pre-orders and production started in early 2017. By March 2017 our crowdfunding campaign had raised just over $133,000.....WOW!

The first shipment arrived into the UK late May 2017 and our 300+ crowdfunding backers started to receive their 'reward' sheltaPod's in April. We then started selling them on our website and had completely sold out by August. We’re now onto our fourth production run for spring/summer 2019 and we've added a new green colour to our range. Preorder now for delivery March/April 2019.
